Are Foxy Lady palms sterile? DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE

I wonder if the very elongated seed has more Veitchia traits and the more rounded F2 seed has the foxtail traits? Typically I find the F1 does have the hybrid vigor, except when they are very variegated. Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.
Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms. They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings. Yep, I was told it’s the mother plant genes that determine the fruit/seed so you can’t tell an F1 hybrid without growing it!
Good quality plant and amazing growth. I bought a 7 gallon from Premier Growers about 8 months ago and it’s already outgrowing the 25 gallon pot I moved it into. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds.

From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber. Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics.
/topic/33571-producing-wodveitchia-seed/ The seeds all had 2 white racing stripes. Therefore, you would expect the foxtails to have the wider leaves.

Leaning Foxy Lady palm

I am good with the outcome either way, but if you really want to rid yourself of that ‘ugly’ plant,I am ready to adopt. I would LOVE to own that ‘ugly’ palm. These looked to be well grown. I have 3-7g (one slight variegation) I have 3-3g (one slight variegation)

I agree with Len, yours is most likely a RSN Hawaiian grown, or Sparksman Florida import that has been resold. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse.

Foxy lady palm searching.

I have 6 mature foxy ladies and all but 2 are variegated. That is how you can tell the difference between foxtail and Foxy Lady hybrid. Note the smooth texture of the seed fiber compared to a course fiber foxtail. I do not grow foxtails, so there could not be a mix up there. I have plenty of foxtails and Veitchia arecina in the yard so maybe it did a cross back with one of them to become fertile? Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying.

  • What’s the difference between the variegated and the green ?
  • After many years and trees that are ungodly tall, my foxy lady, 1 of 2 dropped 2 very ripe very real looking seeds.
  • So why does it seem the green is the better choice ?
  • Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.
  • Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation.
  • The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal.

Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Are they the first two foxy ladies cultivated??? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago. Already have an account?
If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm — Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.

  • Hello, I’m a novice collector and bought a 15 gallon foxy lady from a seller in Temecula, CA about 2 and a half weeks ago.
  • Call me anytime to chat about transplanting palms.
  • I have 3-7g (one slight variegation)
  • The vast majority of the good looking seed are NOT viable.

F2 would be a foxy lady x foxy lady (Exc)x(WxV) rather than back crossed with either parent. Sign up for a new account in our community. Number 1 on my personal list of favorite feather-leaved / crown shafted palms so i completely understand the allure / desire to grow one ( …or a few, foxy gold lol )..
Exactly I believe even the green form has some at some point I saw a mature green form produce some variation. Did not notice the variegation earlier but as Jim pointed out, on the lower leaf there it is. Yeah I could tell it is 100% green as well. If anyone can find a pic of a small full green please post to show the difference thank you Few variegated fronds …..
Sometime even though they are hard, they float. They s/b just a hard and firm as a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today.
I’m no geneticist, but I’ve heard F2 hybrids of anything can be hugely variable with dominant traits ranging from either parent. Also how f2 compares to f1 on their cold hardiness aswell as growth rate. I have an f2 and am wondering how the look of the palm compares to f1. A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3  , i got one today  and I am looking forward to watching it grow

Cairns BG — Famous palms

Regardless, good luck and hopefully you’ll be able to get a hold of this great palm sooner rather than later.. Bigger » seeder » at Kopsick sits close to where the collection’s Veitchia grove is located. I have little doubt that had it been spring, or this time of year, germination likely would have succeeded.
Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature. Here are a few slightly variegated ones. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies.

I have an f2 foxy lady I might be interested in letting go if you are interested I can come pick up that palm at your convenience, deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling. I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!! I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!! He is the only one to have a problem with their foxy lady order, and started to complain even before it was delivered. 1 of each 3 and 7 is slightly variegated with 2 of each being greens.
